Yay for Homecoming!!!

I didn't think I would be, but I actually am really excited for Homecoming this year. So many people are coming back to campus that I haven't seen since graduation. Everyone is nostalgic already and there are so many things going on this weekend that I'm not sure what to do with myself, there are too many places to go and people to catch up with. Sadly, my two best friends from Colgate, Jack and Sabah will not be here, but all my theatre people will be and a lot of friends that I've known since freshman year as well. Here are the plans for today so far:

2:30 - After a meeting at the Barge (think small-scale local coffee shop, very homey), I'll be staying and catching up with Nick, great theatre guy that went out to Nebraska to start his own insurance company.

4:00 - One of my RAs has programmed a jam session for the residents of my two buildings out on the quad. I'm going to support her (and for the free food) and I'm convincing a bunch of friends to come with me.

6:00 - Cajun dinner to support Katrina relief. $20 a plate, coat and tie, but well worth it considering the Cooking Club and the head of the Faculty Diner's Club is cooking. Going with a couple REC peeps.

8:00 - Theatre program down in the arts special interest house on campus. Bringing a bottle of wine to share with all the theatre people that are back. Afterwards, we are going out or staying in, whatever it takes to catch up and have some fun that I've been sorely lacking since I started the job and have had to play the role model all the time. :)

my to-do list today

1) Write a monthly report of the goings on in my Residence Halls, including maintenance needs, resident concerns, and RA evaluations. Due tomorrow, assigned a week ago... of course I procrastinated until I couldn't anymore.

2) 2 one-on-one meetings with RAs to talk about what they need and what's going on with them.

3) Birthday bags for 4 residents that are having birthdays over the weekend.

4) Go over writing proposals for people on Community Councils to get programming and renovations accomplished.

5) A really good lunch with a leadership/public achievement expert... this will no doubt be the best part of a really really long work day.

6) Production meeting tonight for a show that is going up in about 20 days... we have yet to actually cast the parts... how did I agree to do this show?

7) Go downtown to post office to send out majorly big credit card bill and to go buy a mic so I can talk through my computer. :)

And with all that to do, what am I actually doing? Updating live journal of course. Hurray for time-wasting addictions!!!

sittin in the office with nothing to do

Just sitting in someone else's office on someone else's computer (Natalie says hi!) Just some random thoughts/updates for today.

1) We are starting a 30 and under staff member social group... hurray for other young people and having things to do on the weekends!

2) Have a phone date tonight... really excited, I've had this big goofy grin on this afternoon ever since I started thinking about it... it is possible to be so infatuated with someone you've only known for 3 or 4 days?!

3) Blueberry/peach cobbler is one of the yummiest desserts I've ever had... we had a late birthday celebration for someone and cobbler was made and enjoyed by all.

my shopping addiction

OK, so lately, I've had this TV show DVD shopping spree. In the past couple weeks, I bought Season 1 of Lost, Season 4 of Gilmore Girls, Seasons 2 & 3 of Will and Grace, and Season 1 of Queer as Folk. Alias Season 4 is coming out in October, that's the next one on the list. Oh, and yeah, I definitely have spent all the money I've earned thus far on clothes and movies. Someone help!!

the world seems better after a game of squash

Just got back from playing for an hour... seriously, squash quite possibly be one of the most cathartic things ever. No matter what your day was like before (not that I had that bad of a day today, just long) running around the squash court always makes me feel better. Part of it is that it is such a great workout and you sweat out all the stress of the day, part of it is that I like the running verbal sparring match my partner and I have. Most of it though is that you get to thwack (I love that word... THWACK) the hell out of the little black ball and it doesn't go anywhere. Where is it gonna go... squash is played in a small indoor court, there's nowhere for it to run off to. Any other fans out there?

the best job ever

So to avoid the question "What do you do", I'll give you my job description now. I really do think I have one of the best jobs ever. I work with the Office of Residential Life at Colgate University. My area of responsibility is in the First-Year program area... I actually have an apartment in one of the residence halls with my students. I supervise a couple of the RA staffs... answer their questions, help them with their problems, see how they are interacting with their residents, and develop programming with them. I also work directly with the first-year students on a lot of different issues... roommate conflicts, problems with their rooms, help with their questions about life at Colgate, and just being there as a resource and a friend. Besides my official duties, I get to work on whatever side projects interest me. I'm developing a body image workshop for men, I'm available as a resource to student with eating disorders, I'm available as a resource to students who have questions about queer issues, I am working on developing an alumni network for the senior honor society, I am helping to create a stage management training manual, and a couple other things. If you can't tell, I like to keep busy. :)

Best of all about this job, I get to stay on the campus that I graduated from. Colgate became home much more so than anywhere else I've ever been. I definitely became who I am thanks to Colgate, and this is a great opportunity to give back to the school that is so much a part of me. Beyond that, I'm actually planning on a career in student affairs now. I want to continue to work on a college campus with students for a long time... I love this sort of environment.

Alright, that's all for now. Ta-ta everyone!

greetings

Hello everyone! Just decided that I needed another time-waster in my life, so I signed up here. I'm really bad at journals and diaries, but I do hope to make an effort to update at least once every couple days. Anyway, I'll write more later, but just wanted to say I look forward to sharing with you and whatever questions you may have about me, ask away!
